Re: Marathon, Semitic name?

I recall also the woman name מרתא = מר-אתה Martha.

Marathon, Semitic name?

Now that we have had yesterday the annual Boston Marathon, I recall what I have suggested before, namely, that Marathon is possibly the Hebrew מר-אתוֹן, מר-אדוֹן being worshiped there. Compare Athena, which I suspect is our אתנה or אדנה , corresponding to the Hebrew דן (or אדן ) and דינה (or אדינה ....

Re: strange verb question

קלה is certainly a variant of צלה, 'roast', which, in turn, is but a variant of דלה, 'pull-up', and שלה, 'lift, raise', and finally תלה, 'suspend'. Hence 'to roast' is to put directly over a fire.

Re: strange verb question

Here, I have just encountered another א - ה example in the root קלה-קלא . In Jer. 29:22 we read וְלֻקַּח מֵהֶם קְלָלָה לְכֹל גָּלוּת יְהוּדָה אֲשֶׁר בְּבָבֶל לֵאמֹר יְשִׂמְךָ יהוה כְּצִדְקִיָּהוּ וּכְאֶחָב אֲשֶׁר קָלָם מֶלֶךְ בָּבֶל בָּאֵשׁ NIV: "Because of them, all the exiles from Judah who a...

Re: strange verb question

For א - ה endings consider, for instance the חלא, 'fell ill', of 2Ch 16:12
וַיֶּחֱלֶא אָסָא בִּשְׁנַת שְׁלוֹשִׁים וָתֵשַׁע לְמַלְכוּתוֹ בְּרַגְלָיו עַד לְמַעְלָה חָלְיוֹ וְגַם בְּחָלְיוֹ לֹא דָרַשׁ אֶת יהוה כִּי בָּרֹפְאִים

Re: strange verb question

In spoken Hebrew, of Mishnaic origin, גָלְעִין (of the root גלע so near to the root קלע) is 'fruit stone, pit', actually a כָּלְאִין imprisoned inside the body of the fruit, or itself shielding an interior seed.

Re: strange verb question

Speaking is for the ear, writing is for the eye. The way I (and possibly also Jason Hare of Tel Aviv) speak Hebrew כלא and קלע sound exactly the same. They also mean essentially the same: 'enclose'. The different spellings are to alert the reader's mind to the detailed different circumstantial outco...

Re: strange verb question

No Hebrew root can mean "finish"; What is "finish, vanish, fail (OK, fail = fall)"? Only: complete, conclude, at the end (notice: end = and) be done, have, hold and fasten it all הכל together.

וַיָּקָם אַבְרָהָם וַיִּשְׁתַּחוּ לְעַם-הָאָרֶץ לִבְנֵי-חֵת KJV: Hear us, my...

Re: translation of Daniel 9:26

I doubt that כרת , 'cut ,chop, sever', may ever mean "covenant" without ברית . After all, כרת ברית means 'broke bread and sliced the lamb in a feast of brotherhood.' I would translate 57:8 וְאַחַר הַדֶּלֶת וְהַמְּזוּזָה שַׂמְתְּ זִכְרוֹנֵךְ כִּי מֵאִתִּי גִּלִּית וַתַּעֲלִי הִרְחַבְתְּ מִש...
