Re: translation of Daniel 9:26

Jonathan, I am greatly interested in what you are saying: 3. מִזֶּ֣רַע — gemination of the zayin due to assimilation of the /n/ of /min/ Yet it is not clear to me what triggers the gemination due to the assimilation. Is the inner dot, the dagesh, placed in the zayin of מִזֶּ֣רַע to remind the reader...

Re: differentiating vocal stress

In this juncture we should mention the habit of Hebrew speakers to replace the schwa in an initial non-radical letter by an E, for example, בְּרָכָה , 'benediction', from the root ברך , being read BRAKAH. but בְּרוּחַ , 'in a puff', from רוּחַ with a prefixed formative letter B, being read BERUAK. I...

Re: Is the WLC based on the BHS, or based on the LC?

Ralph, In Gen. 2:3 we read כִּ֣י ב֤וֹ שָׁבַת֙ מִכָּל מְלַאכְתּ֔וֹ אֲשֶׁר בָּרָ֥א אֱלֹהִ֖ים לַֽעֲשֽׂוֹת ASV: "because that in it he rested from all his work which God had created and made" My question remains: what do the naqdaniym (the Masoretes) trying to achieve by avoiding a dagesh in t...

Re: Is the WLC based on the BHS, or based on the LC?

Ralph, you are saying: "So let's say a previous word has a Mercha trope. So, That's conjunctive. And the last syllable is open. Then the next word's first BGDKFT letter will have no dagesh." It is a highly sounding rule, but I am sorry to say that I doubt it. Is the intended purpose of the...

Re: The name עשׂו ESAW, Gen. 25:25

I further suspect that יצחק = איש-חק = איש-שחק ישמעאל = איש-מה-אל The ancient double plural ending היא-היא of אדוֹני =אדוֹן-היא-היא , אלוהי =אלוה-היא-היא and ישי = איש-היא-היא appeared also in שׂרי = שר-היא-היא until it was changed, by divine decree, to the secular שׂרה . Gen. 17:15 וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִ...

The name עשׂו ESAW, Gen. 25:25

We read there וַיֵּצֵא הָרִאשׁוֹן אַדְמוֹנִי כֻּלּוֹ כְּאַדֶּרֶת שֵׂעָר וַיִּקְרְאוּ שְׁמוֹ עֵשָׂו ASV: "And the first came forth red, all over like a hairy garment; and they called his name Esau." Gen. 27:11 וַיֹּאמֶר יַעֲקֹב אֶל רִבְקָה אִמּוֹ הֵן עֵשָׂו אָחִי אִישׁ שָׂעִר וְאָנֹכִי אִיש...

Then, for the other persons performing the act רוּץ RUC, 'run' רַצְתִּי = רץ-אתי , with אתי for אני רַצְתָּ = רץ-אתה רַצְּּתְּ = רץ-את רָץ רָצָה = רץ-היא, to be read RAcah רַצְנוּ = רץ-אנוּ רַצְתֶּם = רץ-אתם רַצְתֶּן = רץ-אתן רָצוּ = רץ-הוּא , not רצם nor רצהם . רָצָם =רָץ-הם is 'their runner', and ...

Re: differentiating vocal stress

Note that רַצְנוּ = רץ-אנוּ is 'we, אנוּ , have run', from the root רוּץ RUC. But, רָצִינוּ = רץ-היא-אנוּ is 'we wanted', from the act רצה RACAH. Here the end filler H of the act is preserved as a full fledged היא , with היא-אנוּ referring both to the performer of the act. Isaac Fried, Boston Univer...

Re: Is the WLC based on the BHS, or based on the LC?

So, how come there is a dagesh in the M of עֲרוּמִּים of Gen. 2:25, even though the word is written in full with a shuruk? It is, I think, because the shuruk was added to the biblical text later, after (after!) the placing of the dagesh. Indeed, the עֲרֻמָּה of Hosea 2:5 is written with a qubutz, an...
