Aramaic background of the LXX

I just read a paper by Jan Joosten in the online publication Academia.org called “The Aramaic Background of the Seventy”. In it he proposes that the people who translated the LXX were more familiar with Aramaic than Hebrew. Even though they tried to be true to a Hebrew original, some of the mistrans...

Re: what is up with this b-hebrew mailing list archive?

https://lists.ibiblio.org/pipermail/b-hebrew/ the archive of it seems to be broken, and not sure about the mailing list itself. http://i.imgur.com/bz54ZbL.png anybody know what's up with it? The archive is broken, and I’m not sure if any messages are archived. When this forum was moved here, I was ...

Re: Imperfect and Participle for Present Tense

In Biblical Hebrew, the Imperfect aspect is used when the action has not been completed, despite the tense. But the participle has been used to present tense, though not restricted to that. Can someone please help me understand when the imperfect tense and participle would be used to represent pres...

Re: Noun derivations from roots—patterns

Don’t confuse artifact of translation with how it’s used within Biblical Hebrew. I don't see how what I have written suggests I am leaning on translation. In fact, I am translating based on the Hebrew to point out that these are not gerunds. That's all. I think you are confusing the matter here. I ...

Re: suggestion on memorising hebrew verbs

In the short run, to get your feet wet in reading Hebrew, learn the verbs in the Qatal third person singular form—that’s how the verbs are listed in dictionaries. Secondly, the basic conjugations are based on that form. In the long run, the best way to learn the language is just to read Tanakh from ...

Re: Noun derivations from roots—patterns

• Qal participle: with the meanings of actor or the action (gerund). Is a participle ever used as a verb in Hebrew? 1 Sam 16:1, מִמְּלֹ֖ךְ עַל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל , from reigning over Israel. (see Job 34:30) 2 Kings 11:3, וַעֲתַלְיָ֖ה מֹלֶ֥כֶת עַל־ הָאָֽרֶץ . This one has a final tav (compare Exodus 22:2,...

Re: Psalm 138:2

Michael (and everyone), rendering cantillated Hebrew by web servers is these days no real problem -- as long as one has a proper font installed on your local machine. Many Hebrew fonts don't include the diacritics. On my screen, using my default web font, your citation of Ps 138:2 shows accents as ...

Re: Psalm 138:2

We should get at least the whole verse: אשתחוה אל-היכל קדשך    ואודה את-שמך— על-חסדך    ועל-אמתך כי-הגדלת על-כל-שמך    אמרתך Questions I have (which is why I didn’t answer earlier): Is הגדלת a verb? Or is a noun with a prefixed definite article? If a noun, does it indicate a status of what follows? ...

Re: Translating Amos 9:12

If it is rendered: "all the nations who are called by my name" then the text is talking about nations already called by the name of the Lord - namely Israel or possibly Israel and Judah. I don’t see how you get this from the verse, seeing as “they will expropriate … all the nations which ...

Re: Isa 59:20 compared to Rom 11:26

An update to my last message: I just looked up the photographed copy of the Great Isaiah Scroll online (probably should have done so earlier). The scribe who wrote it was rather sloppy in his writing—many of his yods look like waws and visa versa. The yod in question that I mentioned in my last mess...
