Re: Biblical Hebrew vocabulary

Is there a file online somewhere that has the complete vocabulary (lemmas) of the Hebrew Bible? And not to be picky, but it would be nice if it was sorted into order of number of occurrences. Asking for a friend. :ugeek: Is this even possible, given our present knowledge of Biblical Hebrew? For exa...

Re: Comparing morphology

I am in the process of comparing the Hebrew morphology as encoded by the OpenScriptures initiative with the work of the Amsterdam people at the ETCBC. The former is based on the WLC, the latter on the BHS. I am using Text-Fabric in Jupyter notebooks. The first task was to align the words in both so...

Re: When was yhwh replaced by 'adonai?

Dear Karl and Ste Walch, Since the focus of the list is Biblical Hebrew, we should stick to that. To discuss how the New Testament writers used the Hebrew Scriptures is legitimate, in my view. But christological issues are outside b-hebrew, so I refrain from such discussions. I only want to reitera...

Re: When was yhwh replaced by 'adonai?

There are about one hundred passages in the NT (I have counted them) where it is not possible to know whether kurios in the NT master-text refers to Jesus or to yhwh. There is a basic semantic principle that is used in the interpretation of texts, namely, that we must assume that the writer wrote i...

Re: Is waw Consecutive (wayyiqtol) perfective or imperfective?

Dear Steve: My introduction to the teachings of the Plymouth Brethren was very negative, through a book … I saw negative fruits from that book…. Thanks for sharing, Karl. That would be good reason to reject Plymouth Brethren teaching, if these guys were ones who came up with the teachings. I’ve neve...

Re: When was yhwh replaced by 'adonai?

Dear Rolf: We have from later sources that אדני was being said when readers encountered the name יהוה, but how soon did that practice arise? Any answer by necessity will be speculation because we’re dealing with something that was oral and not written down. Because we’re dealing with something where...

Re: Community Rule 7:26

This is not good Biblical Hebrew, but from Biblical Hebrew seems to mean “[wh]ich should cause to remember expressing in the name [which is] honored above all” “[which is]” is added for English, understood in Hebrew.

Re: When was yhwh replaced by 'adonai?

Dear Rolf: K.W. Randolph wrote: Did you catch on that the pronunciation of יה could very well have been “Ya-ho”, already a way of avoiding the pronunciation of the name יהוה and transliterated at ιαω? In other words, that the evidence that you presented already shows an avoidance to pronouncing the ...

Re: When was yhwh replaced by 'adonai?

Dear Rolf: 1) It’s post-Biblical Hebrew, not Biblical Hebrew . Several scholars include DSS Hebrew into the slot "Late Biblical Hebrew." I disagree with that, but the views of these scholars justify the discussion of DSS Hebrew on b-hebrew. My study of Biblical Hebrew ends with 2 Chronicle...

Re: When was yhwh replaced by 'adonai?

Dear Rolf: There are certain issues with this thread: 1) It’s post-Biblical Hebrew, not Biblical Hebrew. 2) We’re dealing with an oral issue that may not be reflected in writing. To give a modern example—when reading Tanakh and coming across יהוה some people pronounce it as “Ha Shem”, others “Adonai...
