Re: translation of Daniel 9:26

Rolf, I have heard people say something that there is a indefinite period of time that is not mentioned in the prophecy after the 69 weeks or in the middle of the 70th week. I don't know if it is based on a religious belief or the Hebrew of Daniel 9. Some of them say that is based on the Hebrew, bu...

Re: strange verb question

On page 14 of R.D. Wilson’s A Hebrew Grammar for Beginners (1908), under a section called “Feebleness of Aleph and Hê,” the author writes: Rem. 4. In a few other cases, apparently through Aramaic influence, the vowel letter Hê is supplanted by Aleph, e. g., שֵׁנָא for the ordinary שֵׁנָה from יְשֵׁנ...

Re: strange verb question

Jason, Do you know any examples of quotes with hay and alef mixed up like you said? Words that immediately jump to mind are exemplified in the modern Hebrew דוגמה , which becomes דוגמאות in the plurl. Similarly, אמא (borrowed from Aramaic) becomes אמהות . There are plenty of examples of these forms...

Re: strange verb question

Alef and heh are frequently interchanged. Spelling was not as forced back then as it is today.

Re: translation of Daniel 9:26

Daniel 9:23 says Gabriel came to Daniel to help him to understand chapter 8. I believe chapter 9 is linked to chapter 8. It is assumed that chpt 8 is about world empires. I contend it is not. It is about who controls Jerusalem and Daniel's people until the Messiah comes. the fourth beast is not Rom...

Re: translation of Daniel 9:26

משיח is the special title given to King Cyrus in Isaiah 45:1 and in Daniel 9:26 ' יכרת משיח ' translates "Messiah made a covenant", similar too 1 Samuel 20:16 "Jonathan [ יהונתן ] made a covenant [ ויכרת ] with [ עם ] house of David [ בית דוד ]". The verb יכרת translates into ἐξ...

Re: public domain novice Hebrew reader?

Hi Jason, Thanks for the tip and the link about the Chrestomathies. I downloaded two just now, and look forward to test driving them. Excellent. I think chrestomathies are a tool that we could use more of today. I haven't searched for such things in Greek, but I bet they made them back in the day. ...

Re: public domain novice Hebrew reader?

Having more or less mastered Ancient Greek, I am now focusing on my Hebrew, probably now moving from a beginner to an intermediate learner. Hi, Mark. Just wanted to throw out a howdy and say that I'm very happy to see you moving into Hebrew. Best of luck with your studies. Let me know if you want s...

I've never seen it used otherwise.

Re: What is the difference between Adonai with kamatz on nun, vs patah on nun?

Thanks. I am a bit clearer now. But you suggest that אֲדֹנַי can be singular. Where and Why would אֲדֹנַי be singular "my lord"? I'd have thought it'd always be my lords 'cos singular 'my lord' would be adonee. I understand אֲדֹנָי is The Lord, but is it always YHWH? Well, I was actually ...
