Re: Does this word exist?

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oy_vey
Some say it came from German. Chabad says Vey is the Aramaic equivalent of the Biblical Hebrew Oy, as Ste suggested.
Maybe the German language got it from the Aramaic and Hebrew.

Ron, The BibleWorks command to search for all imperative verbs followed immediately by a waw consecutive perfect is: '*@v?q* ו *@v?v* You should get 38 verses with 38 hits. You will not be able to copy and paste the above into BW, but you'll need to type it in yourself. BW will prompt you for the co...

Re: Syntax of Genesis 3:5

The traditional 19th explanation has been that this is a consecutive perfect, in parallel with the consecutive imperfect. The difference is that the consecutive imperfect has a unique morphological form, [i]wayyiqtol[/], while the consecutive perfect is indistinguishable from a regular perfect. Fro...

Re: Psalm 139:20 Masoretic text

BHS and Stone Tanach reads same as what Kirk posted for Leningrad Codex. The Schottenstein Edition of Tehillim pub by Mesorah Publications, Ltd reads ימרוך and נשוא . DSS 11QPsA reads יא̇מרוך̇ and נש̇א̇ו . BHS footnotes also mentions: 1 frt ונשאו cf Vrs prb 1 c mlt Mss עדיך ; prp עליך Can someone he...

Re: Is waw Consecutive (wayyiqtol) perfective or imperfective?

KJV: "While he was yet speaking , there came also another, and said , The fire of God is fallen ...

Re: When was yhwh replaced by 'adonai?

You mentioned that the earliest NT manuscripts that quote the OT, which are at the end of the 2nd century, used abbreviations for Theos and Kurios in place of YHWH. How many NT manuscripts and verses is this? Rolf is talking of the Nomina Sacra , which are evident in practically every single Greek ...

Re: When was yhwh replaced by 'adonai?

Dear Rolf, Could the evidence indicate that the LXX was changed to use kurios in place of yhwh after the NT was written, to align with the NT? You mentioned that the earliest NT manuscripts that quote the OT, which are at the end of the 2nd century, used abbreviations for Theos and Kurios in place o...

Re: Is waw Consecutive (wayyiqtol) perfective or imperfective?

Isaac Fried wrote:The difference between דבר DABAR and אמר AMAR? Consider this, said on a speaker:
הוּא כבר מדבר שעה אבל עדיין לא אמר כלום

Isaac Fried, Boston University

That is pretty good, Isaac. Is there any hint of that differentiation of meaning in the Bible? Like maybe in Proverbs?

Re: Is waw Consecutive (wayyiqtol) perfective or imperfective?

Dear Steve: My introduction to the teachings of the Plymouth Brethren was very negative, through a book written by a man who the New Testament says won’t enjoy eternity with God unless he repents (so far there’s no indication that he has repented) then published under another man’s name (somewhat d...

Re: Is waw Consecutive (wayyiqtol) perfective or imperfective?

Seems to me that דיבר is 'spoke', and אמר is 'said'. ‎ דִּבֶּר is of the root דבר DBR, a stalwart member of the root family דבר, זבר, טבר, סבר, צבר, שבר, תבר טפר, ספר, צפר, שפר, תפר all having the concrete meaning of 'accumulate', as becoming a root that includes the uni-literal root ר R. Isaac Fri...
