Re: Psalm 139:12

Deuteronomy 32:2 comes to mind (ESV):

May my teaching drop as the rain,
my speech distill as the dew,
like gentle rain upon the tender grass,
and like showers upon the herb.

Both as + like = Hebrew כ, same as in Psalm 139:2

Re: When was yhwh replaced by 'adonai?

Hi Rolf, I'm just going to pick on a few of things you've said in this quote, and the rest in a further posting when I have time. It is true that Jesus is called ks. But in the two quotations from Isaiah in Romans 9:28 (Isaiah 10:23) and 9: 29 (Isaiah 1:9), the reference of ks is clearly to yhwh. In...

Re: When was yhwh replaced by 'adonai?

This is very interesting, esp. the wikipedia link, where it says the early manuscripts used a nomen sacrum for the word Spirit, when it referred to the Holy Spirit, and left it alone when it referred t to the human spirit. But the later manuscripts used the nomen sacrum for all occurrences of the w...

Re: When was yhwh replaced by 'adonai?

You mentioned that the earliest NT manuscripts that quote the OT, which are at the end of the 2nd century, used abbreviations for Theos and Kurios in place of YHWH. How many NT manuscripts and verses is this? Rolf is talking of the Nomina Sacra , which are evident in practically every single Greek ...

Re: Psalm 44:22 - "for your sake we are killed" or just "we are killed"?

Yes, that is more or less an accurate translation. The specific phrase in question is : כִּֽי־עָ֭לֶיךָ הֹרַ֣גְנוּ The first section - כִּֽי־עָ֭לֶיךָ - literally says "Yet, upon you", with the preposition עָ֭לֶ /upon giving us 'on account of/because of/for the sake of'. It's a preposition w...

Re: 1 Kings 19, 12

FWIW, the LXX took קול as construct rather than absolute state: καὶ μετὰ τὸ πῦρ φωνὴ αὔρας λεπτῆς. And after the fire was a sound of a small breeze. I personally prefer the translation 'sound' rather than 'voice' for קול , so would suggest that 'a sound of a low whisper' be the understanding of קול ...

Re: Best Review Text

I wouldn't necessarily refer to it as rapid, but I always found Thomas O'Lambdin's Introduction to Biblical Hebrew an easy book to find quick references for Hebrew Grammar. It is catered towards self-study, so I certainly recommend it if you can get it somewhere :)

Agreed. The tag is working fine for me as well.

Much easier to read :)

Re: Should we create a [syr] tag?

Cheers, Jason. I had only 'inspect the element' on my original source, rather than checking the page's source code. Would've seen all the styling going on in the <head> if I had! I'll admit this is the first time I've even seen 'panose'. Googling shows that it was removed from CSS2.1 back in 2011, s...

Re: Should we create a [syr] tag?

I'll quote from the Jer thread in here, and answer accordingly: Steve, What is the electronic source of your text? What font do you expect to use? Which writing system do you want to use? Is it primarily for displaying/quoting the Peshitta? I can set up a BBCode for Syriac like I did for Hebrew, but...
