Re: Number word pair forms

This is the difference between 'construct state', and 'absolute state' - in either case, the nouns could either agree or disagree in number, yet still indicate more than one thing. A good example of this is Genesis 31:41: זֶה־לִּ֞י עֶשְׂרִ֣ים שָׁנָה֮ בְּבֵיתֶךָ֒ עֲבַדְתִּ֜יךָ אַרְבַּֽע־עֶשְׂרֵ֤ה שָׁ...

Re: Ps 139:4

The LXX actually combines the last part with the next sentence in v5: ἰδού, Κύριε, σὺ ἔγνως πάντα, τὰ ἔσχατα καὶ τὰ ἀρχαῖα· Behold, Yahweh, you know all things, the final and the ancient. So I would agree with you that the LXX translator either read כלם , or had a text reading כלם instead of כלה . A...

Re: Ps 139:3

Whilst the literal translation of זרה is 'to scatter, fan, winnow', I don't have an issue with it being translated as 'search out' in Psalm 139:3. Here it probably means 'fan out, winnow through, sift through', which are easily synonymous with 'searching'; think it's essentially saying that Yahweh s...

Re: Genesis 18:3 "from upon"

Hi Kenneth - I'm guessing you're referring to the preposition על in these two verses?

Re: The letter vav

To clarify, it was a comment as to whether ובכל was rightly given the vowel points וּבְכָל by the Masoretes, or whether they got them wrong. Now for וּבְ , I think they're more showing the Tiberian dialect, but I have no evidence (yet) to give on such. For כל however, it most definitely should be po...

Re: The letter vav

Karl, I was thinking that you wanted cases where את means "with" and not where it is the direct object marker. If the DSS spells one different than the other, that would help to determine whether the את should mean "with" or be the direct object marker. No, my question is, how m...

Re: The letter vav

Thanks very much, Ste. It looks like the plene spellings are mainly by manuscript. Certainly. If we look at the dates for the manuscripts with/probably with ובכול , 2QExodb is around 30-68 CE; 4QSama is around 100-50 BCE; and 1QIsaa is around 250-100 BCE. So even though it does seem the plene spell...

Re: The letter vav

Okay, finally had time to get this done. So here we go (just regarding ובכל ): Places where the DSS is not extant at all Ge 7:21; 8:17; 9:2, 10; 41:54; Ex 35:31; Le 18:23; 20:25; 25:24; Nu 21:25; Dt 4:29; 6:22; 16:15; 26:16; 30:2; Jos 9:1; 12:5; 22:5; 23:14; 24:17; Jdg 7:22; 11:26; 14:3;1 Sa 14:15; ...

Re: The letter vav

Sure thing, Karl! May take me a bit longer for that, as את is used quite a bit more than ובכול :)

Re: The letter vav

That's certainly very interesting about normal, every-day Hebrew now in Israel. Would that indicate a development in the language, or were the Masoretes showing a Tiberian-style Hebrew pronunciation of the letter before words beginning with bet, pey, mem or vav? I don't have time right now, but I'll...
