Re: BHS footnote Gen 14:1

Hi Tian, The full footnote reference is 1Q Gen Ap - this refers to the Genesis Apocryphon, which is a manuscript found among the Dead Sea Scrolls (also labelled 1Q20) which is classed as "rewritten Bible" literature. Several of the DSS re-tell stories in Scripture from a slightly different...

Re: Isa 9:3(4) DSS

When I zoom in on the word in question, the first letter looks like a yod rather than a waw. If you look at the other examples of the yod in the manuscript, they look more like ^ than something akin to the more modern ו that the waw's in the manuscript represent. Nevertheless, mistaking י for ו is ...

Re: Isa 9:3(4) DSS

Right now I’m leaning towards it being a noun as a final element of a list. If that is the case, then the waw preceding the word in question is good Hebrew, fitting in the pattern of the verse. But I’m willing to listen to good arguments to the contrary and maybe change my mind. The question would ...

Re: Isa 9:3(4) DSS

Could the prefixed ו not be understood to mean "also" rather than "and"? For the yoke of their burden, and the pole on their shoulder, the rod of their oppressors also you have broken, as in the day of Midiam ? If not, then I would consider it a scribal mistake of dittography, un...

Re: YHWH Elohim - translation as YHWH the powerful? or YHWH the power?

Ste Walch: Are those names in construct, or are they two word names? Or the second word actually an adjective? I see no reason to disregard either option. For the Numbers verses, I would more see them as a two word name. I also like the Idea of "Saul's Hills" or "Benjamin's Hills&quo...

Re: Is this analysis of Isaiah 9:6 a legitimate one?

The Great Isaiah scroll also has שר השלום / "Prince of the Peace".

Can find transcriptions of the DSS over at https://archive.org/details/TheBiblicalQumranScrolls

Re: Is this analysis of Isaiah 9:6 a legitimate one?

No they don't. Nothing they say gives cause to think that there is a specific subject mentioned in the verse that does the "calling", if one wants to take they verb as being "active". If they want to argue that a specific subject is stated, exactly how do they decide which design...

Re: Is this analysis of Isaiah 9:6 a legitimate one?

Well let's start with this statement from the author of the website you've linked to: The Hebrew word “name,” וְ (“and his name shall be called”) is singular which indicates that this child has one name. Trinitarian translations assign at least four names to the child. He is correct that שם here is ...

Re: Is this analysis of Isaiah 9:6 a legitimate one?

No, it most certainly is not. It is, in fact, completely wrong. The traditional translation is spot on: כי־ילד ילד־לנו בן נתן־לנו ותהי המשרה על־שכמו ויקרא שמו פלא יוֹעץ אל גבור אביעד שר־שלום Because a child has been born to us; a son has been given to us; and the dominion shall be upon His shoulder,...

@kwrandolph: My search for proper nouns in construct has given 10 results: Num 33:45 וַיִּסְע֖וּ מֵעִיִּ֑ים וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ בְּדִיבֹ֥ן גָּֽד׃ Num 33:46 וַיִּסְע֖וּ מִדִּיבֹ֣ן גָּ֑ד וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ בְּעַלְמֹ֥ן דִּבְלָתָֽיְמָה׃ 1 Sam 11:4 וַיָּבֹ֤אוּ הַמַּלְאָכִים֙ גִּבְעַ֣ת שָׁא֔וּל וַיְדַבְּר֥וּ הַדְּבָרִ...
