Change in Forum Posting Rules
Friends, As you've noticed, the spammers have found yet another way to circumvent our forum's software protections. I am researching the problem, but it's going to take some time. In the meantime, I have set the forum to "fully moderated," that is, all posts from all members will be put in...

Re: Is this analysis of Isaiah 9:6 a legitimate one?
The quote is helpful. The issue with the Jewish interpreters, according to Hengstenberg, is changing the normal syntax/semantics of the verb. He ends up with the same conclusion I had. And, note carefully, he avoids the question of who the subject actually is! We can speculate that the verb should h...

Re: Is this analysis of Isaiah 9:6 a legitimate one?
The verb and object are united by a conjunctive accent and separated from the rest of the clause by a disjunctive accent: וַיִּקְ רָ֙ א שְׁ מ֜ וֹ I don't quite understand what Hengstenberg's logic is. But that may be my ignorance of the function of the accents here. On linguistic grounds, I would a...

Friends, For your information: Over the past couple of days, bhebrew has been bombarded by spammers. You haven´t seen any because of the rule that new members' first three posts are moderated. However, the volume has been increasing day by day, now approaching 100/day and doubling every day. In an e...

Re: YHWH Elohim - translation as YHWH the powerful? or YHWH the power?
I'm hard put to come up with an example at the moment, but I know that Hebrew nouns are often used as adverbs, and my memory says "nominals" can also be used as adjectives, although they aren't inflected like adjectives. Otherwise, the only other case I can think of is when the two nouns a...

Re: The Modern Hebrew Bible
Okay, that title suggests the "modern" part of it is how the Jewish Bible is edited/put together today. Likely the text itself is the standard Masoretic text.

Re: The Modern Hebrew Bible
I don't have the original context, so I can't be sure what any particular author might mean. But it's well known that the language, grammar and even vocabulary of modern Hebrew differs from the ancient dialect used in the Hebrew Bible. Perhaps what is meant is that the language of the ancient dialec...
