To you or for you

Post by Kenneth Greifer »

Does anyone know any quotes with לכה as "to you" or "for you" instead of לך?

Not in the text of the Bible (from what I found by simply searching for לכה without any lemma restrictions on Logos). However, I'm pretty sure that it appears in the DSS this way. Maybe someone who has access to searchable DSS documents will be able to confirm.

Thanks for finding these quotes. I was looking at 2 Samuel 18:22 and they translate it "there is not a reward ready", but it looks like "there is not a reward from going forth" to me. I am sure that some translations say it that way. Do you know of any?

The word לכה, in the meaning of "going", is a long-form of imperative.
meaning: Go!

I don't know how one can translate the verse with this meaning.

Where did you see that translation?

In Isaiah 14:9, The Great Isaiah Scroll has לכה for לְךָ both times it appears.

Interestingly in the verse prior, it just has לך!

Same scroll, Isaiah 22:16; first two לך are just לך, third one becomes לכה.

לכה appears in the Great Isaiah Scroll in: 33:2; 37:22 (x2); 37:30; 38:7; 41:9, 13; 45:3, 4; 48:5, 8, 9; 57:8; 63:14.

In Isaiah 33:4, לְךָ is actually לכם (singular to plural).
In Isaiah 40:9, לָךְ is as לכי (feminine plene).

DSS write this word לך as לכה commonly.

What is Isaiah 33:4 & Isaiah 40:9?
I don't see the word there.

I didn't say it meant "go". I think it means "to you" or "for you." I forget which one. I said the other word meant there is not a reward for you "from going forth."

Isaiah 40:9 (Mas)

Isaiah 40:9 (GIS)
על הר גבה עלי לכי מבשרת ציון הרימי בכוח קולך מבשרת ירושלים הרימי אל תיראי אמורי לערי יהודה הנה אלוההכמה

I'm still trying to find where I got the 33:4 one from...

Kenneth,

I got you.
You mean about what you wrote:
"There is not a reward from going forth"
and the "going forth" would be מצאת.
?

If so, notice that the whole understanding of "reward" is based on the word מצאת (as it is read).
(as a short away to say: find you a reward).
The word "reward" is a completion for the verse.
The translation is according to the understanding.

So if you change the word מצאת to "from going forth", then you need to give up the word "reward".
And anyway, it wouldn't sound any better (or good) than what it is already voweled.

***
Of course, the "reward" understanding is one out of a few.
