Isaiah 25:7

Post by Kenneth Greifer »

Does Isaiah 25:7 says "the face of the covering that is covering (present tense or participle)..." or "the face of the covering, the covering (infinitive) over..."?

Isaiah 25:7 ישעיה
25:7 וּבִלַּע בָּהָר הַזֶּה פְּנֵי־הַלּוֹט הַלּוֹט עַל־כָּל־הָעַמִּים וְהַמַּסֵּכָה הַנְּסוּכָה עַל־כָּל־הַגּוֹיִם׃

7And He will destroy in this mountain
The face of the covering that is cast over all peoples,
And the veil that is spread over all nations.

Hi Kenneth: it could say either, tbh. Depends on how one reads the vowel-pointing, as the consonants הלוט could be either a participle formed from the verb, or the noun.

The Lexham English Bible translates it as if it is the noun rather than the verb (and also gives it a much better translation of shroud, which makes sense to me):

And on this mountain he will destroy the face of the shroud, the shroud over all peoples, and the woven covering over all nations.
(would interpret the "shroud" here in light of the next verse: the shroud is death.)

The Dead Sea Scrolls show no major variants here (Great Isa. Scroll just has some plene spellings), however the LXX reads very different:

χρίσονται μύρον ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ. παράδος πάντα ταῦτα τοῖς ἔθνεσιν· ἡ γὰρ βουλὴ αὕτη ἐπὶ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη.
on this mountain they will anoint themselves with perfume. You must deliver all these things to the nations, for this plan is against all the nations

...yeah I have no idea what the LXX Translator was looking at/doing.

I think that the best way to read it is as a participle.
