Unicode/XML Leningrad Codex: Updated text, UXLC 1.8 (Build 26.9, 1 Apr 2023)

Post by cvkimball »

The Unicode/XML Leningrad Codex (UXLC) at <https://tanach.us> has been updated to UXLC 1.8 (Build 26.9) of 1 Apr 2023.

The previous Hebrew text, UXLC 1.7, has been updated with 166 text changes by the change file: 2023.04.01 - Changes.xml to produce UXLC 1.8. Thanks to the authors of these changes: Ben Denckla, Moshe Greenberg, Daniel Holman, Allan Johnson, Gary Luhovey. Daniel Holman graciously and conveniently provided 132 change items for the books Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the minor prophets. Many thanks to Ben Denckla and Seth (Avi) Kadish for their review of these changes.

I would like to transition the tanach.us site to another individual or institution over the next two years. The requirements include computer skills and a long term commitment. If you'd be interested in taking over the site, please contact me.

Congratulations, Chris! This is yet another huge release. The changes are not only voluminous but important. UXLC is becoming the definitive transcription of the LC body text, in any medium and at any cost. Plus, as a bonus it is in the Unicode/XML medium (not "trapped" on paper) and it is free of cost and liberally licensed.

WLC improved upon its basis, the BHS body text, and UXLC now improves upon WLC. BHQ will remain incomplete for many years but even in its existing volumes, fails to go as far as UXLC in addressing the shortcomings of BHS. Only Dotan's BHL is comparable to UXLC in quality. We know of many cases in which UXLC exceeds even BHL in quality, but it is hard to say whether BHL still has many gems that UXLC lacks. To find such gems we'd have to have BHL in some digital format, permitting comparison.

Again, congratulations. And thank you for allowing me to play a part in making this release happen.
