Isaiah 21:8 difficult reading, DSS variant

Dear All:

While reading through Isaiah I came across 21:8, as follows:

ויקרא אריה—על מצפה אדני אנכי עמד תמיד יומם ועל משמרתי אנכי נצב כל הלילות

Which made no sense. I then came to the conclusion that אריה probably is a copyist error for הראה. Then I looked up the Great Isaiah Scroll and found that, sure enough, that is the reading there.

ויקרא הראה על מצפה אדוני אנוכי עומד תמיד יומם ועל משמרתי אנוכי נצב כול הלילות

“The one who looks called out, ‘Lord, I am standing upon my watch place daily all the time and am set up all the nights upon my guard times.’”

The LXX treats it as if it were a name, I don’t know how the English translations treat it.

Cool! Thanks for sharing this, Karl. Syriac also has the DSS reading.
Most modern English translations follow the DSS/Syriac reading:
HCSB - Then the lookout reported
NIV - And the lookout shouted
NRSV - Then the watcher called out
ESV - Then he who saw cried out
NASB95, NAS - Then the lookout called
NAB - Then the watchman cried
NLT - Then the watchman called out
NET - Then the guard cries out
