Forum restored!

Last week CenturyLink (a Tier 1 internet service provider) went down and took a large portion of the Internet with it, including our host, ibiblio.org, based in North Carolina. Although the outage only lasted about four hours, the damage was done, and it being the weekend, nothing could be done until yesterday.

Our forum owner, Jonathan Robie, spent a great deal of time getting us back up and at the same time upgraded our forum software to the latest and greatest.

Jonathan will be unavailable for other tweaks for the next two weeks. In that time, use the forum as usual and contact me at KirkELowery at gmail if there are any issues. User avatars are working, but you may not be able to change them or upload new ones. Uploading attachments may also not work. (Tell me if they don't work.) This is because ibiblio.org is tightening down file permissions on the server(s) to fight against spam and malware. But do not despair: in two weeks they'll be able to adjust those permissions for our needs without letting the bad guys in!

Is anything not working at this point? If so, what?

Let's try an attachment ...

The bottom paragraph of that part of the Torah is the testing of Abraham with the binding of Isaac (העקידה). Nice picture!

I haven't tried uploading an avatar yet.

The other problem is that we've got a persistent spambot which tries (and succeeds!) to register a username. Then using that user, we get a lot of spam posts. I have disabled registration for that reason. I had hoped the forum software upgrade would have fixed this problem, but no joy. Has B-Greek had this problem? If so, what was done to block the bot?

You could register a challenge question or Captcha for new registrations. That has worked well for us on B-Greek.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have a challenge question, but apparently the bot is bypassing it. I will try a captcha or a more complex challenge question. What is the challenge question for b-Greek?

I can't seem to reupload my avatar. There's no upload field, for some reason, and it didn't backup my image. That's OK

Jonathan,

This is a known problem. File permissions on the server need to be adjusted. But our list owner is unavailable this coming week and perhaps the next. But it will be dealt with. Promise.
