I have a copy of Weingreen’s composition textbook. Would anyone be interested in working through it informally?

I just opened it for the first time, and I’m kinda surprised at its layout. The first composition is over a page long, and it has four pages of notes on how to approach the translation. It’s not exactly something that is reasonable to type up here for sharing. I don’t happen to have a digital copy of the book so that I can take screenshots to share.

I guess I can snap pics of the pages and put them into a PDF to share — just the first chapter — to see if it’s something you’d be interested in. I’ll do that in the following post.

I probably would use it. Do you have access to a scanner? The price on Amazon even for a used one is a bit pricey, though.

I don't have a scanner. I just have my phone and Microsoft Word.

A friend gifted me a copy a few years ago. I've never used it. I guess it's quite a gift.

Well, at least Amazon thinks so. They want $60 USD for a used copy. Not in my budget, alas.

Absolutely, I would, but I have to procure a copy. We can compare work.

It's out of print now, so it might carry a high price tag, as Dwayne pointed out.

As it's from Oxford University Press, it likely had a high price tag to begin with

Cheapest one I can get is from Japan, at £70. Bit out of my price range for new books this year (already blew my budget in February....)

Well, in the meantime, I posted the first chapter with translation notes as a PDF in the second post on this thread. We can open a thread to work through that sentence-by-sentence together, if you'd like.

Means basically that we'd translate «There was a famine in the land of Canaan, for the people were sinful unto the LORD.» taking the notes into consideration. Then, we'd talk through any differences we had and see about style and what, then we'd proceed to the next sentence.

I think that doing the first exercise together in tandem might tell us if it's something we're interested in doing.

Jonathan Beck and I started building a new version of my website today. We're going to do what we can to use it to attract new students to Hebrew (for private lessons, etc.).

I mention this because I want to do what I can to draw people to this forum as well. I've just created a blog post that mentions our composition group and placed it under the "courses" section of the site.

Notice that the site is not yet ready for publication. All of the testimonial stuff is fluff that came with the WordPress template. I'm going to solicit testimonials from my current students, and hopefully we'll be able to get some money coming in from Hebrew lessons.
