Weingreen Grammar, Composition 31.2

Post by Jason Hare »

Here's the next drill:

(2) Pharaoh called (to) his servants and he said unto them, ‘Why have we sent away this people form serving us (inf. constr. with prefixed preposition and suffix)?’; and his warriors said unto him, ‘Let us pursue after them, for they are in the wilderness’.

Good luck!

Hey, Jonathan!

A couple of things:

(1) Shouldn't the use of an infinitive absolute trigger a word order change?

(2) The yod in the ending ֵ ינוּ would represent a plural in the noun. For example, the difference between מַלְכֵּ֫נוּ "our king" and מְלָכֵ֫ינוּ "our kings." There can be no justification for putting the yod before the suffix of an infinitive construct. So, not מֵעָבְדֵּינוּ but מֵעָבְדֵ֫נוּ mēʿoḇḏḗnû.

(3) הַגְּבֹרָיו wouldn't take the article, since it is already definite with the suffix. I think you're trying to turn גְּבוּרָה into a fighter, but I don't recognize it. I think we talked once about how the root of מִלְחָמָה and נִלְחַם have a qal part that means "fighter." I used that. הַלֹּחֲמִים שֶׁלּוֹ > לֹחֲמָיו.

Do you see a difference between לְמָה and לָמָּה?

שְׁלָחָ֫נוּ means "he sent us," while שָׁלַ֫חְנוּ means "we sent."

I'd put a DDOM in front of הָעָם הַזֶּה and put a dagesh in the dalet of מֵעָבְדֵּ֫נוּ. Also, check the vowel under the lamed of אליו.

Welcome back to the game!
