jason, thanks again; BETA CODE looks certainly more readable than my tLt; it does, of course, entail learning yet another keyboard map, and my emacs editor does not seem hospitable to beta-coding...BUT i'm on it!

BTW should i have changed the "Subject:" of this reply to reflect the new theme?

But Beta Code is ugly. Why not use digraphs when needed, ex. sh for shin, etc. Not precise, perhaps, but not so ugly. (Just my two shekels.)

Do you mean your $:N"Y $:QFLIYM (שְׁנֵי שְׁקָלִים)? I prefer just using šənê šəqālîm myself.

The biblical shekel was pretty valuable. Today, we have agorot for really small amounts. An older word was grushim, but it also doesn’t date back to the biblical times. It originates in the Latin word grossus “thick” because it was originally a thick, cheap coin. Still, people in Israel use the word גְּרוּשׁ gərûš to mean “very little money.” So, we might say שְׁנֵי גְּר֫וּשִׁים šənê gərû́šîm in a playful way.

Well, maybe we should start some new threads and stop writing here. LOL

The transliteration topic can move here.
