Primitive roots

I have studied the Strong's Concordance of Hebrew and it treats compounds words as primitive roots.

נבא "Prophet"
This is not a root word because נ is a prefix, the root is בטא , In Aramaic this is בעא
נבא translates into the compound word "Prophet". נ/πρό + בטא/φᾶτα or ἀναβοᾷ

נפש "Refresh"
The root is שקה , same as ψυχή. נ פש ἀναψυχή / προψύχω

נעל "Bolt / Nail"
נ is a prefix and על ( κλείς) and the root is כלא another word from this root is תעלה
ת = κἆτα thus תעלה is κατακλείς "Instrument for Shutting" hence "Bandage" (Jer 30:13)
and the word describes the water courses of Hezekiah that open and shut.

2 Chronicles 32:30 - Hezekiah stopped the upper watercourse of Gihon
- ת־עלה/κτ־κλ > חד־קל "Hiddekel"
- תעלת > Τίγρις γ/ע ( Gen 2:14)

It can also describes Animals with retractable claws (כלא) e.g. Tiger

You need to explain, possibly first to yourself, what you mean by "נ is a prefix". What is this "prefix" and why is it placed there?

The word נפל naphal is considered a primitive root, however the word
is mostly written פל (Phal) and this is βάλλω.

ברך (BARAK) "Bless"
It looks like a three letter root word but this is εὐλογῶ
a compound of εὐ and ‎ λόγος. εὐλογῶ > ὐλγ/ברך .

λόγος (LOGOS)
- להג LOG "reckoning" ( Ecc 12:12)
Cognates - לח, לחכ , לחי , לע , מלקוח , לשנ , ילע , διάλεκτος , γλυκύς ,μαλακᾶς , λείχω

2 Samuel 23:2
Word was in my tongue.
λόγος(מלת) αὐτοῦ(ו) ἐπὶ(על) γλώσσης(לשו) μου(ני)

דבר (DABAR)
- το ϝερω > τϝρ > דבר
cognates - Verbo, ρημα, Habler, Biblio , Fabula, Converse , Decir

כפל (KPL) "Double" a compound of בדל & שני

(Always a compound word)
Two-Fold
Co-Pula
Du-Plico
Bi-Plex
Bi-Farius
Bi-Narus
Bi-Foris
Ge-Mellus
Di-Ploun
Du-Plus
De-Partire
Di-Vider

- others-
נבא (βοή)
נגש (ἐγγίσας)
נדד (τοεῖτο)
נפש (ψύχω )
מלצ (γλυκέα )
מלח (ἁλυκή )
מתת (δοτός )
מלל (λαλέω)

כפל appears in post-biblical Hebrew as the useful and common קפל, 'fold'. Compare the English multiply = multi-ply as in the multiplication table.

The word Fold would be בדל (Badal) and a probable cognate and the suffix of the word Divider is Videre

בדל/ VDR.

The suffix of the word Multiply is Plex- thus the cognate is לוח

πλάξ / לוח "board, slab, tablet, plank" (for writing)

Exodus 31:18 - שני לחת (MT) δύο πλάκας (LXX)
Exodus 24:12 - לחת ה אבן (MT) πυξία τὰ λίθινα
Exodus 31:14 - לחת אבן (MT) πλάκας λιθίνας
* πυξία(Pukia) - tablet made of boxwood

Dear Lee:

This is a variation on what linguists call “the etymological fallacy”.

Just because a word can be derived from another, doesn’t mean that it carries the same meaning. In Indo-European languages, this is most clearly seen in German where words are mashed together to make new meanings. Words also change meanings, so that “prevent” in Elizabethan times still had its French meaning of “prevenir”, but a bigger change can be seen that the English word “mystery” has near the opposite meaning from the ancient Greek word μυστεριον. Words also can be used in compound lexemes to give new meanings, e.g. “strike out” comes from one of the roots in the homonym “strike” but because it’s combined with “out” the two together make a new meaning. Yes, some words are derived from primitive roots and still have the same meaning as that root, but one can’t count on that.

We need to take words as they are used.

By the way, Strong’s Concordance isn’t considered a scholarly source on this list.

Karl, I was interested in your response to this thread.

I'd been following this thread with some confusion about the relevance of equating BH words with Greek words. I was uncertain whether or not my lack of clarity about the discussion was the result of a failure to understand some underlying issue. If there is some underlying issue, it would be helpful for me to have it spelled out.

I studied the Septuagint alongside the MT and did a word by word comparison
and that how i noticed how seemingly similar they are, word and grammar.

Take a controversial word , CHRIST and the root is χρῖσμα "smear with the hands"
and the word σμάω/שמן means "smear/wipe" then χρ/χρῑ́ω must equate with χειρός.

חרש (HRS) "hand-skills"
- Craftsman, Carpenter, Artisan, engraver, artificer, smith, magician,

μάσσω (Masso) "hand-skills"
-משח "anointing is done with the hand"
-משיחה
-μουσικός (מעוז שיח)
-מצה

χρηστοῦ (Chrestos) "Good with the hands"
חרש טוב : χειρός ἀγαθοῦ
ἀγαθοῦ : אחיטוב
אהבה עגבה : αγαπη, αγαμαι
אח אחת אב אם

The first name in the Lliad is Achilles that is Ἀχι λῆος (אחי לאמ)
and the Septuagint renders אחי as Ἀχι . Αχιτωβ Αχιμελεχ Αχιμα Αχια.

Memnon "Stedfast"
- אחימאמנון : Ἀγαμέμνων

Genesis
בראשית/πρατός
ברא /φέρω
אלהים /ὁ̂ θεον, ἅλιον?
את /τό
ה/ἤ, ὁ̂
שמים/σημεῖον
ארץ/ἔραζε
היה/ἰοί , ἰόομαι
חשך/ σκότος
פנ/πᾶν
רוח/ῥύη
רחפת/τρόχου
אור /πῦρ
טוב/ἀγαθοῦ
רא/ὥρα
כי/ὅτι
בדל/ὁρίζω
קרא/καλέω
אחד/εις
