Hebrew names

Post by Saboi »

The first name mentioned in Homer's Lliad is Achilles or Ἀχιλῆος
and what is unusual about this name, it resembles the Septuagint transliterations
of Hebrew names, where Ἀχι- always transliterates from -אחי.

Ahiah - אחיה , Αχια
Ahitub - אחיטוב, Αχιτωβ
Ahihud - אחיהוד , Αχιωρ
Ahimelech - אחימלך, Αχιμελεχ
Ahiman - אחימן, Αχιμα
Ahimaaz - אחימעץ, Αχιμαας
Ahinoam - אחינעם, Αχινοομ
Ahinadab- אחינדב , Αχιναδαβ
Ahiezer - אחיעזר , Αχιεζερ

In the name Ἀχιλῆος, the word ληός means 'men/people', the cognate is
the word לאמ / λαόν, this the root of the English word 'Land' and also 'Family'
which is ϝὁμιλίαν which is עמילאמ. The prefix אחי/ Ἀχι is not 'brother' but Lover
and root is just אהבה, עגבה or αγαπη, so Ἀχιλῆος means 'Lover of Men', the key element of his story is the relationship with Patroclus.

Another famous name is 'Agamemnon', without the prefix, this is 'Memnon'
which means 'steadfast' and thus we can derive it from אמן, so the name Memnon
is מאמן and Agamemnon is אחימאמן, this ἀγά- prefix means 'devoted'.

Ahaz - אחז = αγις - "devoted"
Ahuzzath - אחזת = αγια - "devoted to God"
Ahaziah - אחזיהו = ἁγί διά - "devoted to God "
Ahiah - אחיה = ἅγιος - "devoted to the God'"
Ahimelek - אחימלך -ἁγί Ἡρακλῆς - "devoted to Hercules"

Hebrew names resemble Greek adjectives of the same meaning.

Ahitub - אחיהוד = ἀγαθός 'devoted too good, good'
Abiather - אביתר = εὐίατρός, εὐίατος 'one who heals'
Abinoam - אחינעם = εὔνοος 'Kind, friendly, pleasant'
Eliakim - אליקום = Ἄλκιμος 'Valiant'

I also looked through the early names between Adam & Noah, two unusual names
is 'Methuselah' and 'Methusael', these can be derives from μεταστέλλω and μετακαλέω
the word ' שאל' means 'Lend, Request, Ask', cognate are ἐξαποστέλλω and καλέω
and שלח 'Send' is just στέλλω 'dispatch' or ἀποστέλλω 'end off'.

- Methuselah, μεταστέλλω 'to send for, summon'
- Methusael, μετακαλέω ' recall'
- Enoch, ἐνεκαίνισεν "Restore"
- Irad, χωράζω ' set-up, town'
- Cain/Kaanan. καινίζω 'make new, the phoenix, blood-red'

- Adam, αἱμός 'blood'
- Lamech, Λύμαξ, λύματα 'wash away'
- Naamah, Εὐρυνόμη 'Eurynome

The word 'Neda' from נדה means 'afterbirth, separation'

נדה (Neda) roots the word 'India'.

Pausanias 8.41.3
A river called the Lymax flowing just beside Phigalia falls into the Neda, and the river, they say, got its name from the cleansing of Rhea. For when she had given birth to Zeus, the nymphs who cleansed her after her travail threw the refuse into this river. Now the ancients called refuse “lymata.” Homer, [Note] for example, says that the Greeks were cleansed, after the pestilence was stayed, and threw the lymata into the sea.

Eurynome is the deity worshiped at a sanctuary near the confluence of rivers called the Neda (נדה) and the Lymax (למך ).

They also interchange, so gets very confusing who is who, especially comparing the
two books of Samuel.

The same character with two interchanging names.

1 Samuel 21:1
Ahimelech ( Masoretic )
Abimelech ( Septuagint )

1 Chronicles 18:16
Abimelech ( Masoretic )
Ahimelech ( Septuagint )

2 Samuel 23:34
Eliam son of Ahithophel
Eliab son of Ahitophel ( Septuagint )

Sometimes the name are reversed

2 Samuel 11:3
Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam

1 Chronicles 3:5
Bathshua , the daughter of Ammiel

The names have gone through so much editing in the two contradictory Book of Samuel surrounding Jesse and Saul.

1 Samuel 14:49
Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishui, and Melchishua

1 Samuel 31:1
The sons of Saul were Jonathan, Abinadab and Melchishua

What happened to 'Ishui', did his name change into Abinadab, this name is
confused even more in 2 Samuel 28 who seems to have being renamed too Ish-Bosheth in 1 Samuel 20:30 (יִשַׁי בּשֶׁת ) which seems to be an epithet of 'Jesse'
as if 'Jesse' was originally the son of Saul, Jesse mysteriously disappears, this
character is Ιεσσαι in the Septuagint and Ishui is Ιεσσιου, near indistinguishable.

The word בעל (Baal) means Husband, this word is used in 2 Samuel 11:26
which reads 'she mourned for her husband(בעלה),

The translation for בעלה would be πόση, or πόσις (Posis/Potis)
and πόσις > πσς > בשת and thus the character 'Ish-Bosheth' is also
called 'Ish-Baal' (1Ch 8:33) and the initial 'איש' (αἷς) is ἠίθεος
so the name is ἠίθεος πόσιος and Jesse is ἠίθεος διος, these are more
like titles then given names.

With the word אֲבִיאֵל , this is not 'Father is God', the name is more personal, so
the initial אֲבִי is not 'father' but ἥβῃ meaning 'Youth', so the name is perhaps
ἥβῃ ἥλιος 'youth dedicated too helios' .

Samuel - σμάω ἥλιος "Shining god"
Ezekiel - ἀζηχής ἥλιος "Strong god"
Ishmael - ὀσμῇ ἥλιος "sweet-smell of god
Abdul - ὀπαδοῦ ἥλιος "servitude to god"
Raphael - θεραπεία ἥλιος ""servitude to god"
Gabriel - κορός ἥλιος 'youth dedicated too god'

'σμάω' means 'wipe' (with oil) and wiping anything with 'Oil'
makes things shine, a word for 'shine' is הלל from ἐλαίου 'Oil'
which is חלב/ἐλυ/λίπα 'Fat, Lard' and σμάω - שמן 'Oil'

'λίπα' (Fat/Lard) also roots λάμπω (Lamp) or λαμπάς which
is the word לפיד (Lamp) which would be a candle, made of Wax
which is solid-fat.

In the ancient world, someone who is devout or religious was called
a 'πῖος' (Pius) well this derives from πίονα/שמן (Piona) which means 'Fat'
that describes a wealthy, unctuous person and the meaning of 'Anointed'
as a flattering title in the Bible.

Menorah - φανῇ ὁράω, πίονα ὁράω
