Half-Ass poetry

Post by Saboi »

The most unusual word appears in Genesis 36:24, ימם and translates 'Mule' and this can be defined from ἡμίονον 'Half-Ass', a compound of ἥμι 'Half' and ὄνος 'Ass'.

The characters in this verse, Zibeon (צבעון, Σεβεγων ) and Anah (ענה, Ωνας ) are ζύγιον & ὄνος and the word ζύγιον, in the form of ὑποζύγια is used in this verse as a translation of חמרים.

Zechariah 9:9
behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
עיר בן־אתנות : πῶλον υἱὸν ὑποζυγίου

Herodotus 1.55
When the Medes (המדי) have a mule ( ימם/ἡμίονον) as king

Herodotus 3.153
twentieth month of the siege a marvellous thing befell Zopyrus, son of that Megabyzus who was one of the seven destroyers of the Magus one of his food-carrying mules ( ἡμίονοι) gave birth. Zopyrus would not believe the news; but when he saw the foal (βρέφος) for himself, he told those who had seen it to tell no one; then reflecting he recalled the Babylonian's word at the beginning of the siege—that the city would be taken when a mule(ἡμίονοι) gave birth—and having this utterance in mind he conceived that Babylon might be taken; for the hand of heaven, he supposed, was in the man's word and the birth from his own mule (ἡμίονον)

This particular 'mule' (half-ass) is Cyrus (Isaiah 45:1 - למשיחו לכורש ) and the word πῶλον 'Foal' is the poetic word for a Maiden or עלמ (Isaiah 7:14), עמנואל- ἡμίονος πῶλος.

פרד- οὐρεύς 'Mule' (ἡμίονος)
פרש- Horse
פרס- Persian

The prefix of ἡμίονος, ἥμι is ἥμισυς, μισός 'Half', see מדי(Mede).

Deuteronomy 2:11 - Anakims & Emims
ענקים - ὀνικός, ὀνικόν
אמים- αιμίονῳ (Aeolic for ἡμιόνῳ)
החרים- οὐρέων 'Mules'
עיר- שעיר, οὐρῇ, σάτουρος

*mules being much used in mountainous countries.
* שעיר & עיר, animals of the הר

The lexicon derives ימם from יום 'day'.

The Greek word for 'Midday' is μεσημβρίᾳ, which is a compound of μέσος (Middle) & ἡμέρας (Day)
and the Latin word is 'Meridiem'. a compound of Medius & Diem. Medidiem > Meridiem.

In Hebrew, two words are also needed to describe the 'midday'.

Nehemiah 8:3
מחצית יום

MHZIT IUM (Hebrew)
MEDIUS DIEM (Latin)

Why does the Hebrew resemble the Latin components of Medidiem?

Deuteronomy 2:11 - ענקים

The root ענק means neck, the word is used in Judges 8:26 describing a 'Yoke' (ὑποζύγια) which is a wooden crosspiece that is fastened over the necks of two animals, The Greek cognate of ענק is ὄγκος, ἄγκος and the Latin, Uncus. The word used for Neck in Judges 8:26 is צואר and this is δειρῇ 'Neck, throat and collar' and the Latin is Torquis.

Uncus (ענק) - A hook that was fastened to the neck
Torquis (צואר) - Chain, collar, necklace, yoke

ζυγ, ὄγκ, ὄνκ, ὄγγ, ὄγλ, ὄλλ, ὄλ : ענק, על : Neck, Collar, Yoke

על - Yoke "two animals joined together by a beam'

The word in Greek, ζυγός (Zugos), this forms the verb, ζυγῆναι 'to join in wedlock' and the Latin word for wedlock is 'Jugum', another word for marriage is 'Conjugium' and σύζυγος (Syzugos) 'Spouse'.

על - Two animals joined together
בעל - Marry, Husband, Wife or 'two humans joined together'

Another Latin word wedlock is Nuptus or Nubo.
* Ezekiel 16:38 - I will judge thee, as women that break wedlock נאפות (Naput)

בעל ' Joined together' (Married), then adultery would mean 'to break the yoke' (על/ζυγ)
or to unyoke, in Latin, Dejungo (de-, ἔξ-, ἐκ-, χέω-, ξε- , ad-, ת),

ת_נאף - ad_ultery' (על/ζυγ)

Perhaps this explains the difference between 'Neptune' & 'Poseidon.

Poseidon (בעלה, πόση)
Neptune (נאף, νύμφη)

Wedlock

The Hebrew for lock is נעל and the root would be על 'yoke together' and על forms the Greek noun, κλείς (Kleis) 'Bolt, lock, nail' and the Latin, Clavus.

κλείς also forms the noun, κατακλείς 'Instrument for shutting' which exists in Biblical Hebrew, as חדקל (Hiddekel) and תעלת, see '2 Chronicles 32:30 - Hezekiah stopped the upper watercourse (תעלת ) of Gihon' and also describes the retractable claws(על) of a cat e.g. Tiger (תער, τίγρις).

על - κολλάω 'Glue, Joined, yoked together'

Genesis 32:25 - Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.

The Hebrew word for 'wrestle' , פתל is a straightforward cognate παλη (πταλη) that roots
the word 'πτολεμίζω (πολεμίζω) 'wrestle' and πολεμέω 'War'.

מלחמה, πολεμῇ , Bellum Duellum

The Latin word for wrestle, colluctatio, from a root meaning meaning 'bend, twist'
or λύγος (Lugos) compare with ζυγός (Zugos).

Psalm 125:5
עקלקלותם 'Crooked ways'
στραγγαλιὰς (Straggalias) 'tie knots, start difficulties, induration in the limb'

Isaiah 27:1
עקלתון 'Crooked'

All these words go back too על/ζυγῷ 'Joined together' describing limbs and joints and thus the
name Jacob is ζυγοῦ or εὔζυγος 'well-yoked' or δίζυγος 'double-yoked' also spelled δίζυξ.

δίζυγος ἠπείροιο (יעקב עברי)

ἠπείροιο - Asia was esp. called the Continent, δισσαὶ ἤπειροι, i. e. Europe and Asia.

ζυγόν (Yoke) with the initial Zayin, appears in the Bible as 'זקים.

To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;

אסר : σεῖραι 'bind or draw with a rope` (lxx -δῆσαι)
זקים : ζυγῶν 'Yoke together
כבל : ὁπλαί 'off ropes, ship's tackle, tools, implements' (lxx -πέδαι)

Psalm 149:6 - חרב פיפיות
Twoedged sword

חרב : μαχαιρᾶς, מאכלת, χειρός, חרש
פיפיות : ξίφιος, σκίφος ' two-edged blade

Lamentations 3:27
It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth
טוב לגבר כי־ישא על בנעוריו

לגבר - τῷ κούρῳ 'the lad
בנעורי - ἐν νεαρά' `in his youth
ישא - ὕψοι ` to elevate, exalt, represent in the 'grand manner'

על forms עלמה, perhaps ζυγής νέᾶ 'newly-yoked' (νεοζυγής)
