Lev. 25:3-7

Post by Isaac Fried »

We read there:
and we recall that the adhered אָכָה of שָׂדְךָ = שדה-אכה is but a variant of the PP אָתָה ATAH (as in וְאָמַרְתָּ וְאָסַפְתָּ), existing now only as an attachment indicating possession (think of שֶלְךָ = של-אכה and שֶלָכֶם = של-אכם.)
In the plural it is אָכֶם, corresponding to אָתֶם, as in אַרְצְכֶם = ארץ-אכם of ibid. verse 9.

A hint as to an earlier existence of אכי for אני is found in the grand אנוֹכי

Attaching the PP אכה instead of אתה helps in avoiding ungainly repetitions. See Gen. 15:7
NIV: “I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it.”
in which הוֹצֵאתִיךָ = הוֹצא-אתי-אכה is for הוֹצֵאתִיתָ = הוֹצא-אתי-אתה.
