Psalm 35:16 any thoughts?

Psalm 35:16 any thoughts?

Post by kwrandolph »

Dear Fellow Hebrew Students:

Psalm 35:16 doesn’t seem to make sense.

בחנפי לעגי מעוג    חרק עלי שנימו

Is there any example from DSS?

The LXX seems to indicate that they had a different text before them:
επειρασαν με εξεμυκτηρισαν με μυκτηρισμον εβρυξαν επ εμε τους οδοντας αυτων

Any thoughts?

The thing is that מעוג is not 'cake', nor 'circle'. It is the same עג as in לעג and the GA in הגה HAGAH, 'bellow', of Isaiah 31:4. Also the GAAH געה 'bray', of Job 6:5. Also the TAQA תקע 'force out a sound', of Judges 7:18. Also the QAAH קאה 'vomit, expel, spew', of Lev. 18:28.

In post biblical Hebrew עגה AGAHH is 'dialect, jargon'.

I would add here Ps.:55:4(3)
מקול אויב מפני עקת רשע
NIV: "because of what my enemy is saying,
because of the threats of the wicked;"

Words related to עקה AQAH: נאק זעק צעק שאג

4Q83 has מ̇ע̇וג חרקו עלי שנים̇
4Q98 has parts of verse 15 and 17 but 16 was totally damaged.

Thank you, Ken.

Part of the verse in one example, missing in the second. Therefore leave the question open and go on.

Thanks.
