The Etymology of יציע of 1Kings 6:5

Post by Isaac Fried »

We read there
וַיִּבֶן עַל קִיר הַבַּיִת יָצִיעַ סָבִיב
NIV: "Against the walls of the main hall and inner sanctuary he built a structure around the building"

The root יצע is a variant of
ידע become apparent
יזע excrete perspiration, sweat
ישע deliver, set free, extricate
יצא come out, appear
ידה hurl
It is also related to
יד hand, related in turn to דד זד סד שד צד יתד
and also to
יש 'there is'
all of the common meaning: 'come out, jut out, pull out, pull up, bring forth, extend, protrude, spread out, stretch, exude.'
Hence
יָצִיאַ = יָצִיעַ 'gallery, balcony, cornice'.
