The Etymology of שרד SRD, Ex. 31:10

Post by Isaac Fried »

It appears to me a variant of שרת $RT, 'serve, busy, alert, brisk.' The שֶֶׂרֶד SERED of Isaiah 44:13 is related the שֶׂרֶט SERET, 'scratch, scrape, score', of Lev. 19:28, and to the post-biblical זֶרֶד ZERED, 'branch', and צרד CRD. The שׂריד SARIYD of Nu. 21:35 is 'survivor, remnant'. The טורד TORED of Prov. 27:15 is 'relentless, torn to pieces'.

It is also related to ירד YRD.

And not to forget the variants
שרץ, 'teem, swarm, abound'
שרש, 'spread roots'
