אזוב EZOB, Ex. 12:22

Post by Isaac Fried »

We read there:
NIV: "Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin and put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the doorframe"

Seems to me that אֵזוֹב is but a variant of עֵשׂוֹב, 'grass'.

Similarly סף SAP is related to אסף ASAP, 'collect, accumulate, pile-up', as is the סוּף SUP, 'rushes', of Isaiah 19:6
NIV: "The reeds and rushes will wither"
Also to סוֹף SOP, 'end', as in Qoheleth 3:11
NIV: "what God has done from beginning to end"

We notice the congenital relationship between אסף ASP, 'collect, gather', and עזב 'abandon, give -up, surrender', as in Gen. 39:13
NIV: "When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house"
and also עדף ADAP, 'surplus, excess, left over', as in Ex. 16:23
KJV: "bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning"

We add to this שׂפה SAPAH, 'lip, rim', as in Ps. 51:17(15)
NIV: "Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise."
and in 1 Kings 7:26
NIV: "and its rim was like the rim of a cup, like a lily blossom"

Also related are the שוה $AWAH, 'value, worth, shape, equal, even', as in Isaiah 40:25
KJV: "To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal?"
and in Isaiah 28:25
NIV: "When he has leveled the surface"
and in Esther 3:8
KJV: "therefore it is not for the king's profit to suffer them."

Also שפה $APAH, 'robust, sane', as in Isaiah 13:2
KJV: "Lift ye up a banner upon the high mountain"

NES, 'banner, manifest', is a sign borne high, נִשָׂא, related to נוֹצָה NOCAH, feather, plumage', and also to נוּס NUS, 'run away, carry oneself, distance oneself'.
