BRUDIYM Gen. 31:10

Post by Isaac Fried »

We read there
NIV: "the male goats mating with the flock were streaked, speckled or spotted."
KJV: "and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled."
with בְּרֻדִּים being but a slight variation of פְּרֻדִּים, 'separate', as are the hailstones of Ex. 9:18
KJV: "Behold, to morrow about this time I will cause it to rain a very grievous hail, such as hath not been in Egypt"

Also related to the root BRD-PRD is the root פרט PRT, 'particulate, breakup, separate, detach, detail', of which is the PERET of Lev. 19:10
KJV: "And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger"
Also the post biblical פְּרוּטָה PRUTAH, 'penny, small coin, small change'.

By following the more distant relatives of the kindred root pair ברד-פרד we observe the typical diffusion of a pervading and permeating elemental idea into an ever wider circle of root clans, here by the agency of the uniliteral root R signaling multiplicity. Consider

From צרד we have the new, and very useful, צָרוּד CARUD, 'hoarse', related farther to שָׂרוּט SARUT, 'scracted, scored', (here referring to the throat). For more on SRT see Lev. 19:28, Lev. 21:5, and Zechariah 12:3.
