Captivity - why does nobody like the yod?

Post by Chris Watts »

I am constantly coming accross this issue where the word for 'captivity' has a qeri and a ketiv. I chose Jeremiah 29:14 as just one of many many examples where the qeri reading is insisted upon. I simply can not fathom out why, I have found not one single hebrew reference either in my books or online that explains this issue, and this is a rare thing not to find someone mentioning an obvious biblical situation such as this.

וְנִמְצֵאתִי לָכֶם נְאֻם־יְהוָה וְשַׁבְתִּי אֶת־שביתכם שְׁבוּתְכֶם

Thank you

Do you have access to HALOT? They spend some time talking about the oddity under the entry שְׁבוּת. DCH breaks שְׁבוּת into three different entries, but it doesn’t talk about the -ut/-it distinction except to basically indicate that they are the same sense.

Thank you Jason for your response. No I do not have HALOT nor DCH.
