Ehyeh אֶֽהְיֶ֖ה

Post by MGWB »

Is אֶֽהְיֶ֖ה (Ehyeh) a form of the Tetraggramaton?

Is it ever used as a proper name of G-d in the Bible, the Targums, the Mishna, or the Talmud?

Dear Michael,

"Ehyeh" is not a form of the tetragramaton. Ex. 3:14 is a play on words. So no, Ehyeh is never used as a proper name of God.

Indeed, it is a usual verb form, with (generally speaking) the meaning of "I will be". See Ruth 2:13

If G-d said to Moses "Thus shall you say unto the Children of Israel "Ehyeh has sent me unto you," and if Moses actually said this to the elders of Israel, didn't both G-d and Moses use "Ehyeh" as a personal name?

And if there was a play on words, didn't it consist of using this verb as a proper name?
