YouTube: Dr. Aaron Hornkohl’s Research

Post by Jason Hare »

Apparently, Dr. Aaron Hornkohl focused his research on the antiquity of the reading tradition provided in the Masoretic Text. Has anyone read his publications?

He teaches at Cambridge (personal site), and his book The Historical Depth of the Tiberian Reading Tradition of Biblical Hebrew (link) addresses the topic that he mentioned in the YouTube video. It’s available for reading online (as are several of his other writings). Anyone interested in what he has to say?

A free book (which you can also download from the above link) by a Hebrew scholar. What's not to like? :D

I'll check it out. I've downloaded a couple of his papers from Academia.edu that look interesting, but haven't gotten to read them yet.

I love the attitude! If you’re lacking something to read, I have a ton of articles that I can send your way.

I recognise the name, but not sure if I've read/seen any of Dr. Hornkohl's stuff.

Will make amends to that this weekend!

I really do not lack anything to read, but if you have a "ton of articles," I can add them to my half ton that I already have lined up. At least I could pick through them and find what may be pertinent to my level of Hebrew at the moment. :D

Speaking of free books, besides the useful paid books supported by Logos Bible Software (which, alas, I can't always afford :( ), there are free books Logos offers each month to users who sign up for their email alerts. At least one per month, sometimes two. And, they do have good sales from time to time, as well. If you're not already a user, I encourage you to check them out. For instance, Benjamin J. Noonan's Advances in the Study of Biblical Hebrew and Aramaic (Zondervan, 2020) is a very helpful guide to the latest research in BH and BA, including debated topics as whether the BH verb system is marked morphologically for tense/aspect or not, standard and non-standard word order, the value of comparative Semitics, and more. I got both this volume and the companion volume for Ancient Greek by Campbell on sale for around $9.99 USD each, about a 30% savings. Outstanding! I recently read both volumes and found them fascinating.

Link to purchase Noonan's book ( the price is higher now, though not bad):

Now if I could only get HALOT and BDAG at a great sale price... :)

I'll have to watch Hornkohl's YouTube video you linked to. I finally have enough extra data per month that I can watch some videos and listen to some podcasts. 8-)
