Aleph with Beth - My Review of An Excellent Resource

For quite a while now I have been meaning to do a follow-up to Dewayne Delaney’s very helpful review of the Aleph with Beth program developed by Andrew and Beth Case. In his review, done 2½ years ago, Dewayne had completed just the first several Lessons in the series – there are now 158 Lessons (they keep adding to it) and 59 “Biblical Hebrew Easy Stories”, along with a vast array of supportive resources and other Biblical Hebrew works, such as a many of the Hebrew Psalms put to music by Andrew, who besides playing a major role in the Hebrew teaching, is a talented musician.
I kept putting off this task because Aleph with Beth is such a large and outstanding body of work that it seemed like I would have to write a very long and comprehensive review indeed to even begin to do it justice. I have been through the entire program twice, and have now completed about 70% of my third time through the 159 lessons and 59 Hebrew stories. (I do so because I am using Aleph with Beth to teach others Biblical Hebrew.) Finally, I decided that it is time to simply jump in and take a shot at it. Below I recommend one of the lessons for those interested, to get a clear first-hand picture of just how good this body of work is. Please take the time to do that if you are one of those folks!
I believe Aleph with Beth is a game changer. I predict that it will be around for many years and will have a great influence on how Biblical Hebrew is taught in the future! It has become my go-to resource in my work of helping others to achieve access to the Hebrew text of the Tanakh. As Dewayne pointed out in his review, Andrew and Beth Case have very intentionally made this program available to all without cost – a body of work to which they have now devoted many years of their lives. If your experience has been “You get what you pay for.” then you will be pleasantly surprised by this program. This time you get way more than you could ever afford!
Beth is the primary teacher, and a very gifted teacher she is. Not only is she a gifted teacher of Biblical Hebrew, but she brings an energy and an remarkable talent for communication that makes every Lesson a joy. Many of the 159 Lessons have a “B” section - an additional video, and there is a quiz/review video after every 2nd Lesson. The typical Lesson video is around 20 minutes long – so all together there is something approaching 50 hours of instruction. (At least that is my rough calculation.)
Throughout the whole program, not a word of English is spoken. The teaching is done entirely in Biblical Hebrew. As someone who has followed the typical university curriculum when I was learning intermediate and advanced Biblical Hebrew 15 years ago, I kept wondering how in the world Beth would explain the more complex concepts of Hebrew grammar without resorting to English. Well, with a skill quite unique and quite wonderful to witness Beth Case accomplishes this in the most effective fashion. Again, for someone who knows where she is going, it is a joy to watch her at work! To say Beth is creative and skilled in her teaching hardly does her justice. I simply have never seen anything else that even approaches this as a way to acquire the basics in Biblical Hebrew. And not just the basics! By the time you've completed this program, you will have already spent many hours reading Biblical Hebrew narrative!
Andrew brings a very important balance and support to the series, helping to add interest and very often reading sections of the Biblical Hebrew text in the later more advanced lessons. He is the consummate actor who often assumes a role to bring some comic relief, and often acts the part of the student, posing questions to Beth on what is being taught. He thereby helps to make many of the teachings more memorable and to help the viewer understand the lesson. Along with Andrew, Beth employs other individuals from time to time, her own children occasionally, props of various descriptions, outstanding presentation of the Hebrew text to accentuate different points, and excellent graphics. The graphics become especially important to the presentation as the Lessons move into more advanced Hebrew text.
As I said, I now use this excellent body of work as my go-to resource to introduce others to Biblical Hebrew. By the time the student has completed the Aleph with Beth series, he/she is more than ready to move straight into reading Biblical Hebrew narrative. Of course it takes many years to become truly fluent in Biblical Hebrew narrative, but this program will get you to the place where you can begin that journey with competence and with confidence.
If you really want to take the measure of this body of work for yourself, then I would STRONLY recommend that you take twenty minutes and watch Beth teaching “The Days of the Life of Jacob” in Lesson 114. One could choose almost any of the later videos at random, but this one is as good as any. There you will see for yourself the very helpful graphics mentioned above, the very clear presentation of the text by Beth and Andrew, the remarkably well done explanations by Beth in places where she knows her students need some help to relate the Hebrew text to what they’ve already covered, and just the right amount of repetition to help the student fully grasp the text.
And, I tell you with all sincerity, the half is not yet told!
