It occurs to me that in Ps. 22:17
כי סבבוני כלבים עדת מרעים הקיפוני כארי ידי ורגלי
the ארי ARIY is here a variant of אור UR, 'fire, fire pit, brazier', which I suspect is also embedded in the אריאל ARIY-EL of Ezekiel 43:15.

Nope.

Context indicates that we should expect a verb at that spot.

Ancient translations indicate that that was a verb.

The verb כאר is found also in cognate languages and Amos 8:8, with the meaning of distortion.

DSS (Nahal Heber) has כארו which is a third person plural verb.

Conclusion: כארי is a copyist error that wasn’t caught, but copied.
